Abstract
This study was conducted to examine the relationship of attachment trauma by primary caregivers to complex posttraumatic stress syndromes and shed light on its mechanism of action. Based on previous studies and literature reviews, we proposed full and partial mediation models in which traumatized self-system and self-compassion would mediate the relation between attachment trauma and complex posttraumatic stress syndromes. Furthermore, as an alternative model, we proposed a simple effect model in which the three predictors would each be related to complex posttraumatic stress syndromes independently. Structural equation modeling(SEM) was used to analyze data from a sample of 393 university students. SEM results indicate that full and partial mediation models fit the data well, but simple effect model does not fit the data. Also, the path from self-compassion to complex posttraumatic stress syndromes was not significant in the full and partial mediation models. Then, as the best-fitting model, we suggested a modified partial mediation model in which traumatized self system would mediate the relation between attachment trauma and complex posttraumatic stress syndromes. In conclusion, the results suggest that in order to effectively prevent or treat complex posttraumatic stress syndrome, it is important to focus on mitigating the impact of attachment trauma by primary caregivers as well as improving the traumatized self-system. Lastly, the theoretical and practical implications of the study as well as its limitations are discussed.
